Women's hockey team looks to make a move this season

The Concordia Stingers women’s hockey team is looking to step up its game this season.

The team finished fourth in the five-team conference last year with a 5-15 win-loss record. However head coach Les Lawton says the team has what it takes move up in the standings.

“Our goal is to finish top three in the league,” he said. “We have a good team with strong players, so I think it’s attainable to get to that point.”

The Stingers’ big competition is the top two teams in the country, the McGill Martlets and the Montréal Carabins. As they continue to develop and grow the Stingers will be looking to pullout some upsets.

Key veterans to watch include defenders Mary-Joëlle Allard and Danielle Scarlett who are being counted on to maintain a strong presence and provide leadership.

However, with a team full of fresh blood, fans can expect some of the younger players to make an impact.According to Lawton, key rookies to look out for are forwards Devon Thompson and Cassiel Lalonde-Lajeunesse. The coach believes they have what it takes to make a big impact on the team and help the Stingers achieve their goal this year.

Lawton has also added a new member to his coaching staff this year that will help propel the Stingers forward in their quest to becoming a top three team in the RSEQ league. Julie Chu, a highly respected player and the captain of Team USA, joins the Stingers as an assistant coach responsible for skill development, special teams and video.

The Concordia Stingers face off against the Carleton Ravens this Sunday at 3 p.m. in their 2014 season home opener.
