Annual hockey event raises $3100

Students from Concordia University's John Molson School of Business and Dartmouth College’s Tuck School of Business came together Jan. 10 for an exciting two-game hockey series and to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.

More than $3100 was raised from donations, raffle ticket sales and concessions at the packed event held at the Ed Meagher Arena on the Loyola campus.

The 9th annual Concordia-Tuck event featured a moving puck-dropping ceremony with Bhavish Beejan, representing the MS society, and Joyce Vineburg, who was stricken with MS 30 years ago and who has been confined to a wheelchair for the last 10 years. Vineburg was accompanied by her son, Rob, a Concordia alumnus, her daughter Sharon and three grandchildren who looked on with pride from the stands.

“My mother will remember this moment for a long time and was very honoured to be part of this event," said Ron Vineburg who laced up his skates and played a game.

The first game between the cross-border rivals was a tightly-woven match that saw Tuck eke out a 3-2 overtime victory. Pierre Zavadell and Nick Wade tallied for Concordia, while Peter Albro, Matt Delesis and Tony Cape responded for the New Hampshire visitors.

The second game featured two high-powered offences trading goals. With less than two minutes in the game, Tuck notched the winner for a 6-5 victory.

Concordia's goal scorers were Steve Chausse with a pair, J.M. Tremblay, Bryson McDonald and Chris Tomiuk. Tuck’s Simon McKay and Nick Bayley scored two each, while Adam Mantin and Derek Novack added singles.

The Tuck-Concordia hockey series has been an annual charity event since 2001. To date it has raised more than $19,500 for organizations like Sun Youth, the Red Cross and Hockey for the Homeless – to name a few.
