What it means to win, what it takes to win, has been written about many times. For me, the article I have included below, sums up my take on winning.

WINNING IS NOT NORMAL

Winning is not normal, That does not mean there is anything wrong with winning. It just is not normal. It’s highly unusual.

Every competition has only one winner. No matter how many people enter, only one person/team wins the championship.

Winning is unusual- as such it requires unusual action.

In order to win, you must do extraordinary things. You cannot just be one of the crowd. The crowd does not win. You have to be willing to stand out and act differently.

Your actions need to reflect unusual values and priorities. You have to value success more than others do. You have to want it more. WANTING IT MORE IS A DECISION YOU MAKE AND ACT UPON- NOT SOME INHERENT QUALITY OR BURNING INNER DRIVE OR INSPIRATION. You have to make that value a priority.

You cannot train like everyone else. You have to train more and train better. You cannot talk like everyone else. You cannot think like everyone else. You cannot join the crowd, or act to the standards of the crowd, or do what is “in.” You need to be willing to stand out from the crowd and CONSISTENTLY in exceptional action. If you want to win, you need to accept the risks and perhaps the loneliness because…

WINNING ISN’T NORMAL

PERSONAL NOTE

I have had over 40 years’ experience as a football coach. After working with hundreds of athletes, I have seen what strengths it takes to win and the challenges an athlete faces. It’s physical, it’s mental, and it’s dealing with the relationships one has with teammates and coaches. On a team, one wants these interactions to work. I understand what it takes to make these interactions work, and how to handle them when they don’t.

So, if ever you want to to talk about your football life, and what life can look like after football, I would be glad to talk to you.

PERSONAL NOTE

The world we live in today and university life has changed considerably since I went to Sir George Williams…and it will continue to do so. However, some of the beliefs I formed are still relevant today.

Curiosity and passion will get you a long way. Be excited about what you are studying. I had a passion for English Literature. I figured I had my whole life to learn about business, but for my university years, I wanted to pursue my passion.

If you want to talk about what you are passionate about and where that could lead career wise, I would be glad to hear about what is important to you.

PERSONAL NOTE

I remember my university years quite well . . . they were filled with hope and frustration, good choices that were well rewarded and bad choices that led to failure, emotional highs, and emotional lows, and ultimately lessons and learning that formed the foundation for more of the same through the next forty years of my working life.

Reflecting on this, I cannot help but think that with a little timelier guidance, and a little more “ears wide-opened”, especially during my university and early working years, I might have enjoyed much more of the good stuff, and less of the bad.

Hoping now, that I can be of help to others . . .
