Mike Hickey
Inducted in 2012 as a Builder
Institution: Sgw, Concordia
Mike Hickey has one of the most impressive and eclectic coaching résumés of anyone in Canadian university basketball having successfully worked with both men's and women's programs for more than five decades.
His coaching career began in 1973 when he was just 24 years old and he took over the Sir George Williams Georgians men's program. Despite his youth, he posted a 56-18 win-loss record over two seasons and brought the team to the national championship tournament in back-to-back years. When Concordia came on the scene, Hickey took on head coaching duties for the women's program and pulled double-duty as an assistant with the men's team for the first four seasons. He was at the helm of the women's program for 14 years (1975-85 and 1991-95). Under Hickey's leadership, the Stingers won conference championships and represented Quebec at the nationals on five occasions, finishing with bronze medals in 1977 and 1983. He was named Quebec University Athletic Association women's basketball Coach of the Year five times.
Hickey spent eight years working with the Canadian national teams. He was with the men's program for two years and helped Canada finish sixth at the 1982 FIBA World Championship. He spent six years as an assistant with the women's national program, including 1996 when Canada participated in the Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
