Sports Hall of Fame Inductee
1982-1983 Men's Hockey Team
Inducted in 2014 as a Team
Institution: Concordia
From a highly-respected program with a long tradition of success, the 1982-83 Concordia Stingers men’s hockey team proved to be one of the most accomplished in the university’s athletic history.
In Quebec University Athletic Association play, the Stingers finished in first place in the regular season with a 23-7 win-loss record. They scored an average of 5.8 goals per game and gave up just under three goals a game, thanks to the standout goaltending of Stéphane Héon.
They rolled through the Quebec conference playoffs, defeating the UQTR Patriotes in two straight semifinal games. In the finals, they took the series three games to one from the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi Inuks.
The CIAU national championship was in Moncton, N.B. March 10-13. The Stingers were pooled with the hosts and University of Toronto. In the first game, the Stingers defeated a powerful Varsity Blues team 3-1. Two days later, a 4-4 tie with the Moncton Aigles Bleus gave Concordia a berth in the championship game. On March 13, the Stingers became silver medallists after losing a hard-fought battle to Dave King and the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
Nevertheless it was a memorable season with many individual highlights as well. Captain Mike Walker was named a CIAU all-Canadian. Walker and Héon were QUAA all-stars, and Héon was named Concordia’s Male Athlete of the Year.
