Patricia (Paddie) Hemlock-Chiara was
one of the exceptional two-sport athletes who flourished in the 1970s at Loyola
College and Concordia University where she played an essential role in the
success of the women's
hockey and basketball programs.
She began her university career as a forward with the Loyola Tommies hockey
team in the 1973-'74
championship season. Her efforts that first campaign earned her Loyola Freshman
Athlete of the Year honors. A proficient scorer, she played three seasons,
winning all-star and MVP honors at several tournaments and winning two Quebec
championships.
Paddie played the first of four basketball seasons in 1974-'75. A centre with strong defensive
abilities, she evolved into a great all-round player who earned team MVP honors
by the end of her career. Paddie led the Quebec conference in rebounding three
years in a row and was a three-time league all-star. She was a member of two
QUAA championship teams and made two appearances at the nationals.
Adding to her reputation as an exceptional all-round athlete, Paddie was also
an intramural tennis champion.
