Led by women’s hockey goaltender Katherine Purchase, the Concordia Stingers collected 11 bursaries at the Fondation de l’athlète d’excellence du Québec gala on Wednesday night.
Purchase was one of the top honorees of the evening. She was named the outstanding female athlete in the academic excellence category. The native of Halifax maintains a 4.3 GPA in Accounting. She was also the outstanding rookie in RSEQ women’s hockey and was named to the CIS all-rookie team last March.
Alex Tessier of the women’s rugby team and Olivier Hinse of the men’s hockey were honored for their athletic excellence in team sports, while football’s Jeremy Pelletier received a Montreal Alouettes bursary.
Seven accomplished Stingers received recruiting bursaries from the foundation whose goal is to help develop top Quebec athletes and to keep them at home. It also recognizes outstanding talent that comes to Quebec from out of province to study and compete.
The Concordia recipients are: TJ Umar, men’s basketball; Charles Debove, men’s rugby; Francis Carter, wrestling; Claudia Dubois, women’s hockey; Sophie Gagnon, women’s hockey, Myles Brown, football and Jade Dufour, wrestling.
Concordia athletes collected 11 awards for at total of $31,500 from the FAEQ. In the 30-year history of the foundation, it is the highest number of bursaries ever collected by Stingers.
