The Campus Recreation outdoor soccer season ended late last month with two champions crowned. Parselona won the Division 1 title, while Division 2 honors went to United Nations.
Parselona finished the regular season in second place with a 3-2 win-loss record. The team defeated Les Balafres 1-0 in semifinal action and upset first-place GCC with a 2-1 victory in the championship game.
United Nations who dominated the season with a 4-0-1 win-loss-tie record also rolled through the playoffs. They beat The Players 1-0 in the semifinals and went on to defeat Draft Team 3 in the championship by a 4-3 score.
The league began in mid-September with six teams in the competitive Division 1 pool and six in the recreational Division 2 league. As the season progressed, the performances on the field got better and better.
“As proof that the level of the game was a good one, we can look at the presence of two draft teams that made the playoffs,” said Atish Woozageer, an Engineering student who referees in the intramural league. “For me that was the high point of this season.”
Draft teams are usually comprised of individuals who sign up for the league and are grouped together to form teams. The players have never worked together before, and it’s tougher for them to succeed when pitted against groups who have experience and cohesiveness at the start of the schedule.
This season Draft Team 3 played against Draft Team 1 in the semifinals. Draft Team 3 went onto the final game of the Division 2 playoffs.
Although Concordia students have priority to register, the intramural outdoor soccer league is open to everyone who wants to enjoy a positive recreational experience that celebrates a high spirit of sportsmanship, fair play and mutual respect. If you have a passion for soccer, whether it’s as a fan or a player, catch the next season of excitement on the fields of Concordia University’s Loyola campus.
