Stinger to play for Algeria in international soccer games

Concordia Stinger rookie defender Imane Chebel has been selected to play for the Algerian national soccer team in qualifying games for the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

She will represent Algeria in a two-game series with Senegal on April 4 and April 10.

“Imane's biggest strengths are her consistency and ability to cover lots of ground while winning the majority of her one-on-one battles,” said Stinger head coach Jorge Sanchez of Chebel’s abilities. “She is very efficient technically and has a high soccer IQ. Her athleticism should also serve her well.”

Chebel had an excellent rookie season with the Stingers that culminated with her being named to the RSEQ second all-star team for the indoor season that wrapped up last week.

Algeria is currently ranked 74th in the world while Senegal is 78th. If successful Algeria would move onto the second phase of qualifying and face the winner of Libya-Ethopia later in the year.

The 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations be held Nov. 17 to Dec. 1. The top three finishers will qualify for the 2019 Women's World Cup to be held in France.
