Stingers poised to strike gold at wrestling nationals

Eleven out of 13 Concordia Stingers wrestlers competing at the U SPORTS national championships will compete for medals in the final day of competition on Saturday at University of Calgary.

On the men’s side, five Stingers will wrestle in gold medal matches: Francis Carter (68 kg), Samuel Barmish (82 kg), Alex Moore (90 kg), Jordan Steen (100 kg) and Frédérick Choquette (120 kg).

Carter and Steen are defending their 2018 gold medal performances.

Newcomer Dajinder Singh (65 kg) will wrestle for a bronze medal, as will second-year competitor Aaron Orzsak (76 kg).

The Concordia men’s team is currently in third place with 50 points out of 15 teams. Brock University sits in first place with 71 points.

There are six Stingers competing on the women’s side. Jade Dufour (51 kg) and Amanda Savard (67 kg) will wrestle for gold on Saturday.

Laurence Beauregard (59 kg) and Geneviève Lamarche (72 kg) are in bronze medal matches.

Finally, rookie Kaleigh Prieur (48 kg) is looking to finish fifth at her first nationals, while Kaya Dube Snow (55 kg) is competing for seventh place.

The Concordia women’s team also sits in third place. The Stingers have 30 points. Once again Brock is in first place with 46 points.

Day 2 action gets underway with the fifth- and seventh-place matches at 3 p.m. The bronze matches begin at 5 p.m., while the gold medals will be decided at 7 p.m.
