With eight wrestlers competing, Concordia University will be sending one of its largest contingents in recent memory to the CIS championships at University of Calgary on Friday and Saturday.
Leading the way will be fifth-year veteran Tyler Marghetis who is looking for a fifth medal in as many years. This season, he won two university tournaments and competed at one national event. He wrestled at the Canadian Olympic trials in December and is the first alternate for Canada in the 74 kilos weight class.
At CIS, Marghetis is looking to finish his career on top of the 76 kg weight class. He was a gold medallist in 2004, 2005 and 2006. As a rookie in 2003, he won a silver medal at the national championships.
At 72 kilos, Serguei Guevorkian is making his third straight appearance at nationals.
There’s a youth movement in the Concordia wrestling program and it will be well represented by six rookies at the nationals. The men will be represented by Alex Dyas (90 kg), Michael Noonan (68 kg), Gurveer Talhan (61 kg) and heavyweight Ahmad Abo Mathkoorh. They are young but they could surprise people.
On the women’s side, rookies Ella Rebalsk (63 kg.) and Nikita Chicoine (67 kg) will represent Concordia. Certainly Chicoine is expected to make a big impression. She had impressive wins at the Concordia, Queen’s, Toronto and Western university tournaments this year.
