Veteran Tyler Marghetis won the 76 kg weight class to lead the Concordia Stingers to a four medal haul at the CIS wrestling championships in Calgary on the weekend.
Marghetis finished his career with a 3-1 victory over McMaster University’s Sheldon Francis in the gold medal match on Saturday. It was the fifth medal of his career at university nationals. He was also a gold medallist in 2004, 2005 and 2006. As a rookie in 2003, he won a silver medal.
The Ottawa native’s strong performance earned him all-Canadian honors. In Concordia Athletics’ 33-year history only a select few have earned five all-Canadian awards. Marghetis is the third athlete to reach this elite milestone.
Also making a big impression at nationals was first-year wrestler Nikita Chicoine. She earned a silver medal and was named an all-Canadian. At 67 kilos, she won three preliminary matches before losing 3-1 to Simon Fraser’s Stacie Anaka in the gold medal match. The Montrealer was also named the outstanding rookie wrestler at nationals.
Concordia won two bronze medals. Rookie Gurveer Talhan finished third in the 61 kg weight class, while Alex Dyas, also a first-year athlete, finished third at 90 kilos.
Four other athletes represented Concordia at nationals. They were Ella Rebalski, sixth at 63 kilos; Michael Noonan, seventh at 68 kilos; Serguei Guevorkian, fifth at 72 kilos, and Ahmad Abo Mathkoor, eighth in the heavyweight category.
