Sanchez named to Universiade soccer team

Jorge Sanchez, head coach of the Concordia Stingers, has been named to the staff of the Canadian women’s soccer team for the 25th Summer Universiade set to take place July 1-12, 2009, in Belgrade, Serbia.

He will serve as the team leader, while Graham Roxburgh of Trinity Western University and Liz Jepsen of the University of Alberta will take on the challenges of head coach and assistant coach, respectively. The staff was selected by Canadian Interuniversity Sport.

"It is a great honor and privilege to represent Concordia, CIS and Canada at this prestigious event,” says Sanchez. “I look forward to working with Graham and Liz, who I have met at various CIS events, and I am confident we will put together a squad that will proudly show off CIS soccer."

The Dorval Que., resident has more than 30 years of experience as a player, administrator and coach. He is a fully-certified Level 3 (License 3) coach who has worked as an assistant with the highly respected Lac St. Louis Lakers organization, coaching with the under-17 girls team. From 1997 to 2001, Sanchez was an assistant coach with the National High Performance Centre in Montreal, where Quebec players identified by the national team train. Over the years, he has also coached several provincial teams, with the Lakeshore Soccer Club and at John Abbott College.

Sanchez has been head coach at Concordia since 2002 and has been president of the CIS Women’s Soccer Coaches Association since 2005.

  • Note: Women’s soccer was a demonstration sport at the 1993 Summer Universiade and made its debut as an official sport in 2001.

The Summer Universiade is an international multi-sport event that takes place every two years, and is second only to the Summer Olympic Games in the number of participating athletes and countries. The Universiade is open to competitors between the ages of 17 and 28 who are full-time students at a post-secondary institution (university, college, CEGEP).
