Soccer Stingers set for Sherbrooke showdown Sunday

The Concordia Stingers men’s and women’s soccer teams are set to kick off the 2008 Quebec university season with an action-packed opening weekend at Concordia Stadium.

The Stingers will host the UQAM Citadins on Friday evening, but will officially celebrate the new season when the Sherbrooke Vert et Or come to town on Sunday afternoon. The teams have been working hard to promote “Stingers Soccer Sunday” and hope to have more than 500 fans in the stands.

“Getting a great crowd out on Sunday will serve two purposes,” explains Jorge Sanchez, head coach of the Concordia women’s team. “It increases our home-field advantage and also helps create a great university soccer event. University-level soccer is a great calibre of play and fantastic entertainment. We hope this will be the start of some great crowds at our home games.”

There’s a special attached to the Sunday game. Members of the soccer teams are selling tickets in advance for $4. With each ticket comes a free jumbo hotdog trio, which includes a hotdog, chips and a drink. The cost is $5 at the door.

Buzz, the immensely popular Concordia mascot, will join the crowd. Organizers will also bring out the Hamster Balls for some halftime fun.

The women’s game will start at noon with the men’s scheduled to follow at 2 p.m.
