Concordia University wrestler Tyler Marghetis is among the Desjardins Top Eight academic all-Canadians for the 2007-‘08 season announced today by Canadian Interuniversity Sport.
Every year, a growing number of CIS student-athletes are recognized as academic all-Canadians, having maintained a grade-point average (GPA) of 80 per cent or better over the academic year while competing in a varsity sport.
Among these outstanding individuals, one female and one male student-athlete from each of the four CIS regional associations are selected annually as Desjardins Top Eight academic all-Canadians.
Marghetis is one of the most decorated wrestlers in CIS history. In five years of varsity competition at Concordia, the 24-year-old athlete claimed four individual gold medals and one silver at the university national championship, all in the 76-kilogram weight class.
The Ottawa native’s gold medal performance in 2008 earned him all-Canadian honors. It was his fifth all-Canadian honor of his career. In Concordia athletics’ 33-year history only a select few have earned five all-Canadian awards. Marghetis is the third athlete to reach this elite milestone.
In 2007-‘08, his first year of a Masters in Teaching of Mathematics, Marghetis maintained a 4.21 GPA (out of 4.30). He was awarded Concordia’s Nick Herscovics Memorial Scholarship, was named a CIS academic all-Canadian for the fifth time and was a member of the Dean’s List. He hopes to pursue a PhD.
