Women's soccer game honours late Stinger

The Concordia Stingers women’s soccer team will play with a little extra heart this Sunday when it hosts the McGill Martlets in the fifth annual Erica Cadieux memorial game at 1 p.m. at Concordia stadium.

The game is symbolic of women's university soccer supremacy between the two institutions and pays tribute to Cadieux, who died tragically when she was struck by a car in January 2006.

Afterwards members of Cadieux's family will present the plaque that bears her name to the captains of the winning team. Erica's widower, Carlo Spadafora, and her children, Bianca, 6, and Olivia, 5, have made a special trip to Montreal from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., where they now live.

Cadieux was a mid-fielder/defender with the Stingers women's soccer team 1992-'94. Rhonda Baptiste, a former teammate and one of the event organizers, describes Cadieux as "an exceptional human being who was filled with Stinger pride."

There is no charge to attend the game. However, donations of cash and teddy bears for the Montreal Children's Hospital would be appreciated.

McGill has claimed each of the last four games. The Stingers hope to get their name on the plaque for the first time this Sunday.
