Erica Cadieux honored at women's soccer game

The members of the Concordia Stingers women’s soccer team will have extra motivation this Sunday at noon when they host the UQTR Patriotes in the sixth annual Erica Cadieux memorial game at Concordia stadium.

The game pays tribute to Cadieux, who died tragically when she was struck by a car in January of 2006.

Cadieux was a mid-fielder/defender with the Stingers women's soccer team 1992-'94. Rhonda Baptiste, a former teammate and one of the event organizers, describes Cadieux as "an exceptional human being who was filled with Stinger pride."

Afterwards members of Cadieux's family will present the plaque that bears her name to the captains of the winning team. Erica's widower, Carlo Spadafora, and her children, Bianca, 7, and Olivia, 6, will make a special trip to Montreal from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., where they now live.

There is no charge to attend the game. However, donations of cash and teddy bears for the Montreal Children's Hospital would be appreciated.

The McGill Martlets were the opponents and winners in each of the first five events. Scheduling challenges bring about new opponents for this year’s game.

The Stingers hope to get their name on the plaque for the first time this Sunday. In 2010, Concordia played the Patriotes twice, winning 1-0 on Oct. 1 and posting a 1-1 tie on Oct. 31.
