David Zilberman, Concordia University's 2006 Male Athlete of the Year, added to his impressive résumé with a series of accomplishments when Canada's wrestling community gathered in Saskatoon last weekend.
Zilberman, a Leisure Sciences student from Montreal, won the 96-kilo weight class at the Canadian Senior Championships on May 7. The following day he also won the national Greco-Roman title and finished first in the qualifying competition for the 7th World University Wrestling Championships. Zilberman will represent Canada and Concordia June 15-20 in Ulanbaatar, Mongolia. A minimum of 25 countries will send students to compete in this prestigious competition.
Tim Wadsworth, a second-year Arts student from Montreal, also qualified in the 66-kilo weight class to represent his country and university at the world university championship in Mongolia. However, in the Canadian senior competition he finished sixth.
Several Concordia teammates also competed at the senior championship. Tyler Marghetis finished third at 74 kilos, Jonathan Rioux finished in fourth place at 84 kilos and at 60 kilos, James Mancini was 5th. Marghetis and Rioux finished in second place in qualifying for the world university competition.
Former Concordia athlete Martine Dugrenier also faired well. She won the women's 67 kilos weight class at senior nationals and earned a place at the world university championship.
