Duff helps soccer Stingers break losing streak

Concordia forward Jennifer Duff scored a second-half goal to give the Stingers a 1-0 victory and their first win over the McGill Martlets in 10 years of women’s university soccer action.

The last win for the Stingers over the Martlets came in a conference semifinal game on Nov. 1, 2002. The score was also 1-0, but the game was decided in a shootout.

“We played smart, we took advantage of the chance we had and we defended well,” said Concordia head coach Jorge Sanchez. “We didn’t give them many good chances and when we did, Saby (Dagenais) made the saves.”

Dagenais, a rookie keeper from Lorraine Que., made six saves for the shutout and was selected the game MVP.

Duff, a fourth-year veteran from Moncton, N.B., has been exciting to watch this season. She has seven goals and three assists for 10 points in nine games.

The Stingers host the first-place Montreal Carabins on Sunday at 3 p.m.
