The Concordia Stingers women’s hockey team beat the No. 1-ranked Montreal Carabins 2-1 on the road Friday night and are looking to take advantage of that momentum this afternoon when hosting the Ottawa Gee-Gees in their home-opener at 3 p.m.
Coaches and players alike are crediting a team-first philosophy for the victory and plan to use the same approach the rest of the season.
Claudia Dubois, a very skilled rookie forward who fans should watch closely, scored Concordia’s first goal of the season at 7:35 of the first period to give the Stingers a 1-0 lead.
Montreal tied the game seven minutes later and the teams were dead-locked until Kerianne Schofield scored the winner at 5:56 of the third period.
Devon Thompson, one of the Stingers’ key scorers last season, set up both goals.
Second-year all-star goaltender Katherine Purchase turned away 30 of 31 shots.
Although some names standout on the scoresheet, acting head coach Julie Chu was very clear that “it was a team effort” that won the game.
There was lots of excitement and energy around the Concordia athletic complex yesterday from members of the women’s hockey team. Now they have to turn their attention to the showdown with the Gee-Gees, a team that took three of five games from the Stingers last season.
Currently, both Concordia and Ottawa have 1-0 records. The Gee-Gees defeated the Carleton Ravens 2-1 in their opener last Friday.
