Happy holidays for cagers

The Concordia Stingers men's basketball team enjoyed its holiday trip to Victoria, where it swept three strong opponents to win the Guy Vetrie Memorial Tournament held Dec. 28-30.

The No. 6-ranked Stingers defeated the Trinity Western Spartans 73-61 on the first day. All-Canadian forward Pat Perrotte scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the charge.

The following day, Concordia upset the No. 2-ranked UBC Thunderbirds 84-70. The score at halftime was 33-24 for the Stingers, who stretched the lead to 25 points with eight minutes remaining in the game. Heading into the game, UBC had a perfect 16-0 win-loss record

Perrotte scored 19 points to lead his team to victory. Ben Sormonte chipped in with 17 points, while Damian Buckley added 13 points and 11 assists.

On the last day of the competition, Concordia downed the No. 4-ranked Victoria Vikes 58-50. Third-year forward Dwayne Buckley was the leading scorer in the game with 17 points. He also had seven rebounds and three steals.

Concordia now has a 12-5 win-loss record overall. The Stingers are 12-1 versus Canadian competition, including a 5-0 record versus Quebec conference opponents.

Quebec league play resumes this weekend. The Stingers will travel to Ste. Foy, Que. to face the Laval Rouge et Or on Friday. They return home to host the McGill Redmen on Saturday at 4 p.m.
