Damian Buckley Named Interim Head Coach of Men's Basketball Program

The Concordia Stingers are proud to announce that Damian Buckley has been named interim head coach of the men’s basketball program.

A standout point guard during his playing days, Buckley suited up for the Stingers from 2005 to 2009, leaving his mark as one of the most decorated players in program history. He was an RSEQ all-star in all four seasons, a two-time Concordia Male Athlete of the Year, and capped off his career as the 2008-09 RSEQ Player of the Year and a first team CIS All-Canadian.

“He knows what it takes to succeed at this level, and we’re excited to see him lead the next generation of Stingers basketball,” said Concordia Athletics Director D'Arcy Ryan. “Damian has an exceptional basketball mind and a genuine ability to connect with student-athletes.”

Following his outstanding playing career, Buckley transitioned into coaching. He served as an assistant coach with the Stingers, before expanding his experience with the Ottawa Gee-Gees and most recently the Montréal Alliance of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL).

"Concordia has been a part of my life for the past 20 years as an athlete, as a student, as an assistant coach and now as a head coach," said Buckley. "The experiences at Concordia has molded me into the man I am today and continues to be an essential part of who I am."

"I’m looking forward to getting Concordia back to a National contending program. I had the opportunity to be a major part of our National success last season, where we finished 5th in the country; and I'm extremely humbled and excited to continue on the journey with our athletes."

Men's basketball opens up their RSEQ season schedule Nov. 6 at UQAM, with the home opener on Nov. 8 at 4 p.m. vs. Bishop's.
