Men's basketball upset UBC to finish 5th at the U SPORTS Final 8 tourney

The Stingers beat host team UBC in the consolation final 87-80 to finish 5th in Canada.

After finishing as runner up in the RSEQ conference, Concordia men's basketball earned a wildcard berth at the U SPORTS national championship tournament in Vancouver, B.C. Coming in ranked #8, Concordia played the #1 Ottawa Gee-Gees on Thursday, Mar. 13. After clawing their way back from a 16-point deficit, the Stingers took the lead to start the fourth quarter but would ultimately fall to the Gee-Gees 79-69.

Fourth year Sociology major Alec Phaneuf lead all scorers, putting up 19 points for the Stingers, nabbing Player of the Game honours. Karam Sahly also scored 14 points, while Junior Mercy had 12 in the losing effort.

Concordia extended their season by one more game after an 81-66 win over the No. 5 Bishop's Gaiters in the first consolation game of the 2025 INDOCHINO U SPORTS Men's Basketball Championship at the War Memorial Gym in Vancouver. The Stingers win avenges the 75-61 defeat they suffered to Bishop's on March 1 in the RSEQ final game and splits the season series between the two squads at 3-3.

The Stingers were led by Jaheem Joseph, who had a game-high 18 points, while Alec Phaneuf added 18 and Karam Sahly chipped in 17.

The win earned the Stingers a spot in the consolation final versus No. 4 UBC Thunderbirds. Concordia edged out UBC securing an 87-80 victory in the battle for fifth place led by Alec Phaneuf's stellar performance. The Stingers showcased their offensive prowess, particularly from beyond the arc, shooting an impressive 50% from three-point range. Phaneuf finished with a game-high 31 points, including seven three-pointers, while Jaheem Joseph added 19 points and four three-pointers.

With the win, Concordia finishes with a 23-8 overall record, and their best finish at the Final 8 since 2007, when they also took fifth spot.
