George Lengvari to match Giving Tuesday gifts to men's basketball

Head coach Rastko Popovic is calling all alumni and fans to support the Concordia Stingers men's basketball team on Giving Tuesday and to take advantage of a generous matching gift from former Loyola College star George Lengvari.

The chairman of Lengvari Capital who graduated from Loyola Cum Laude with a BA major in Economics in 1963, will match donations up to a total of $10,000.

In 2021, Lengvari was the first recipient of the inaugural Mitchell Family Alumni of the Year Award, celebrating former Canadian university athletes who have become leaders in their communities and who have made significant contributions to their alma maters. Always generous, Lengvari has been further inspired by the philanthropy of Doug and Lois Mitchell.

“George has been very generous to our university, both with his time and financial support,” said Popovic. “We are very fortunate to have his leadership. His help is very impactful on the type of experience we can offer our Stinger basketball players.

“I know our team and the Department of Recreation and Athletics appreciate what he has accomplished in his life and, more importantly, how he gives back to the community, and not just to Concordia.”

With the extra support, Popovic wants to increase financial awards for his student-athletes and to secure additional competitive games against recognized U.S. programs. Increased funding would also allow the Stingers to engage a full-time assistant coach. The team’s training regime could also benefit from the purchase of an additional state-of-the-art shooting machines for player skill development.

Lengvari has also generously committed $5,000 to the Concordia women’s basketball program to help boost its Giving Tuesday fundraising efforts.

Giving Tuesday takes place this Nov. 30 and is a global day of creating positive impact. It has become a wide-spread tradition celebrated on the Tuesday following American Thanksgiving.

No need to wait until Giving Tuesday – all donations made from now through Nov. 30 will be counted in the campaign. Click HERE to support men’s basketball.
