UPDATE - Concordia, McGill to battle in RSEQ women's hockey finals

After a delay of a week due to health and safety precautions, the Concordia Stingers are ready to battle the McGill Martlets in the best-of-three RSEQ women's hockey championship series.

The action starts tonight at McGill’s McConnell Arena at 7 p.m. and continues Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Ed Meagher Arena on Concordia’s Loyola campus. Game 3, if necessary, will be back at McGill on Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Martlets finished in first place in the six-team Quebec conference with a 12-3 win-loss record and 24 points. They are currently the fifth-ranked team in U Sports women’s hockey.

The Stingers were second in the final conference standings with an 11-3-1 performance and 23 points. Concordia has an eight-game winning streak going and is the No. 3-ranked team in the nation.

There were three regular season meetings between the teams. McGill won the first meeting 2-1 last Oct. 31, but the Stingers won the final two – 5-4 on Nov. 19 and 4-3 on Dec. 5.

The last time the teams met in the post-season was in the semifinals in 2019. The Martlets swept the series in two straight games.

The last time the Stingers won the RSEQ championship was in 2018. McGill is the defending champion having won in 2020.

Two Quebec conference programs will compete in the eight-team draw at the U SPORTS national championship March 24-27 in Charlottetown, PEI. The two RSEQ finalists automatically qualify for the championship, but the league champions will have a better draw.
