Brigitte Laganière leads Stingers national hockey award winners

Senior defender Brigitte Laganière became the first Concordia Stinger women's hockey player to earn two all-Canadian honours in more than 15 years when the U Sports award winners were celebrated at the annual gala in Charlottetown, P.E.I. on Wednesday night.

Joining Laganière on the honour roll were veteran right wing Stéphanie Lalancette, who was named to the second all-Canadian team, and Émilie Lavoie who was selected to the all-rookie team.

A 25-year-old from Anjou, Que., Laganière was named a first team all-Canadian in front of her teammates and coaches who are in Charlottetown for the national championship. In 2019-20 she was on the second team.

This season the assistant captain had three goals and 14 assists for 17 points in 15 games and finished fifth in RSEQ scoring.

Concordia goaltender Cecilia Anderson, who was an Olympian with the Swedish national team that won a silver medal in 2006, and forward Dominique Rancour were the last Stingers to earn the prestigious awards twice. Both were honoured in 2003-04 and 2004-05.

Lalancette was the leading scorer on the Stingers and finished second in conference scoring. She scored seven goals and added 14 assists for 21 points in 15 games. This year she also earned the first RSEQ all-star honour of her career.

Lavoie of Beloeil, Que. proved to be a strong addition to the Stingers. She played all 15 games, collecting eight goals and eight assists for 16 points. She was the sixth best scorer in the conference and the highest scoring rookie.

She is a graduate of Cégep Édouard-Montpetit where she was a RSEQ all-star in 2019-20.
