With an exciting 58-57 win over the McGill Redbirds before a capacity crowd on Saturday afternoon, the Concordia Stingers men's basketball team improved its RSEQ conference record to 3-0.
Point guard Sami Jahan led the attack with 21 points for the Stingers. Fellow guard Alec Phaneuf was also a key contributor with 15 points and nine rebounds.
“This was a gutsy win for us and I’m proud of our players for their effort and execution,” said Stinger head coach Rastko Popovic. “Our grueling non-conference schedule really prepared us for RSEQ league play, and we look forward to building on the strong start.”
Concordia is in sole possession of first place in the conference which launched the basketball season on Nov. 3. The Stingers picked up a 78-73 victory over the highly regarded UQAM Citadins in the season opener. Last Thursday they rolled the Bishop’s Gaiters 74-61.
Concordia has one game on the road this week. The team will travel to Quebec City to face the Laval Rouge et Or on Saturday night. The game at Université Laval looks to be an intense showdown since the Rouge et Or are also undefeated with a 2-0 record.
