Theriault named rugby all-Canadian

Concordia Stinger captain Sydney Theriault was named to the CIS all-Canadian women’s rugby team announced last night at the national championship banquet in London, Ont.

The fifth-year Stinger has a long list of rugby accomplishments. In 2005 Theriault was a Quebec conference all-star and she reached all-Canadian status in 2006. She also took over the leadership of the Stingers in 2006 as team captain.

This season, she was playing at a whole different level. Her commitment to conditioning and her vision of the game had her dominating the Quebec conference. The tenacious fly half was named the most outstanding player in the Quebec conference despite missing two regular season games due to injuries.

“She is our most dedicated athlete on and off the field,” says Concordia head coach Graeme McGravie. “She’s an athlete who really puts in the time. She trains all the time and is always working to improve her game. She stays after practices to do extra work, take extra balls.

“Her forté is her decision making and reading defences. She’s head and shoulders above the other players at this level.”

Theriault and the Stingers won the Quebec championship with a 17-5 win over the Laval Rouge et Or on Oct. 27. The win gave them a berth in the six-team national championship currently under way in London, Ont.
