The Concordia Stingers and McGill University men's basketball teams resume their fierce rivalry on Saturday at 4 p.m. when they battle for the George Lengvari Cup at Concordia Gym in N.D.G.
The fourth annual game pays tribute to George Lengvari, a university basketball legend who represented both institutions in the 1960s. He will be on hand to do the ceremonial tipoff and award the Cup afterwards.
This is the second time the Stingers will host, and head coach Rastko Popovic and his players are thrilled to have prestigious event in their home gym.
“We’re excited,” said Popovic. “This is one of the biggest games of the season and the one we look forward to the most. We’re happy to have George back on the Loyola campus and look forward to introducing him to the 2022-23 team.
”Lengvari, a native Montrealer and chairman of Lengvari Capital Inc., graduated from Loyola College Cum Laude with a BA major in Economics in 1963. He went on to earn a law degree from McGill in 1966. Lengvari has been a dedicated supporter of both programs.
In 2021 Lengvari was the recipient of the inaugural Mitchell Family Alumni of the Year Award, celebrating former Canadian university athletes who have become leaders in their communities and who have made significant contributions to their alma maters.
Also in 2021, Lengvari announced an exceptional gift supporting the basketball programs at both Concordia and McGill with a $1 million donation to each school.
It is believed to be the first time in the history of Canadian university sports philanthropy that an alumnus has made a simultaneous million-dollar gift to two alma maters.
