The Concordia Stingers men's basketball team won its fifth and sixth straight games and took sole possession of first place in the Quebec conference with two victories on the weekend.
Last Friday night the Stingers travelled to Lennoxville, Que., where they defeated the Bishop's Gaiters 69-60 on the strength of veteran forward Pat Perrotte's 25-point performance. The following night at UQAM, Perrotte's 23 points paced Concordia to an 83-79 victory over the Citadins.
The wins give No. 10-ranked Concordia a 9-2 win-loss record in the Quebec standings. Bishop's falls to second place with a 7-3 record and the Laval Rouge et Or hold down third place with a 7-4 record.
The Rouge et Or, who have developed into Concordia's fiercest rival, will travel to Montreal Friday to meet the Stingers. Tip off is 6 p.m. At stake is home-court advantage in the playoffs. The team that locks up first place can host a semifinal and the conference championship. Only five games remain for the Stingers.
When Laval and Concordia last met on Jan. 20, the Stingers dominated 91-76. Rookie Damian Buckley scored 19 points in the victory, but he had lots of help with four teammates also putting up double figures. Dominic Soucy scored 36 points in a losing cause for the Rouge et Or.
Tickets are available in advance by calling (514) 848-2424, ext. 3898.
