Stingers women's hockey shutout Huskies in National Quarterfinal

SASKATOON (U SPORTS)  - Concordia Stingers’ goaltender Jordyn Verbeek made 26 saves in a 4-0 shutout over the host Saskatchewan Huskies in the second quarterfinal of the 2024 GFL U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship presented by Connect Energy at Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon.

Verbeek, a third-year goaltender from Langley, B.C., stopped 11 shots in each of the first two periods, followed by another four in the third.  Her counterpart Camryn Drever made 37 saves for the Huskies at the other end of the ice.

The No. 1 seeded Concordia will face the No. 4 seeded Waterloo Warriors in a semifinal Saturday at 4 p.m. The Huskies will meet the STFX X-Women in a consolation semifinal Saturday at 10 a.m.

Concordia opened the scoring at 8:29 in the first period after a bouncing puck on a delayed penalty flipped off the stick of Emmy Fecteau and over the right shoulder of Drever. The Huskies had a chance to tie the game around the 11-minute mark in the frame but Verbeek was able to clear the puck away with her paddle before it crossed the goal line.

Emilie Lavoie’s cross-crease pass found Rosalie Bégin-Cyr who shot it into the net before Drever could get across at 3:12 into the second for the Stingers’ second goal.

The Stingers sealed the win with a goal at 13:40 from Émilie Lussier.  The puck landed on her stick after a Drever rebound. Lussier added an empty net goal for the Stingers at 19:19.

Joining Lussier for the multipoint night was Lavoie and Justine Yelle, each with two assists.
