Women's hockey down Gaiters in OT thriller

Women’s hockey win two match-ups against Bishop’s to continue their undefeated streak. They remain first in U SPORTS and in the RSEQ with an 8-0 record and 16 points.

The Stingers hosted the Gaiters on Friday, Nov. 15 for their Pink in the Rink game, and defeated them 4-3 in overtime.

Forward Émilie Lussier opened the scoring halfway through the first period. The Gaiters tied the game 13 minutes into the middle frame, but only 2 minutes later, forward Megan Bureau-Gagnon gave the Stingers the lead again. A few seconds into the third period, the Gaiters scored again to tie it. Forward Zoé Thibault scored on the powerplay with 10 minutes left, but Bishop’s managed to tie the game once again, forcing overtime. Lussier scored her second goal of the night 3 minutes into OT to give the Stingers the 4-3 win. Goaltender Jordyn Verbeek made 14 saves.

On Sunday, Nov. 17, the Stingers travelled to Bishop’s for a rematch, winning by a final score of 5-3.

Forward Courtney Rice scored 2 goals, forward Émilie Lavoie tallied 1 goal and 3 assists, forward Jessymaude Drapeau had a goal and an assist, and forward Alexis Bedier added a goal. Defender Léonie Philbert also finished the game with two assists, while goaltender Arianne Leblanc made 22 saves for the win.

Lussier leads the RSEQ in goals and points, with 8 goals and 3 assists for 11 points in 8 games. On the national level, she has the third most goals in U SPORTS.

Verbeek and Leblanc lead the conference in save percentage (.946 and .924, respectively) and goals-against average (1.0 and 1.9) for goaltenders who have played in 2 games or more.

Women’s hockey will be back at home on Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. to face off against the Montréal Carabins.
