The Concordia Stingers women’s soccer team made history Sunday afternoon, defeating the Laval Rouge et Or 1-0 at Concordia Stadium for the program’s first home victory over Laval in more than 20 years.
Rachel Vermaire scored the game’s only goal in the 22nd minute, capitalizing on a well-executed set piece.
Holly Hartlen sent a free kick into the box, where Vermaire managed to get a touch on the ball out of mid-air, redirecting it past the Laval goalkeeper to give the Stingers a 1-0 lead.
From there, Concordia’s defence held firm, with goalkeeper Naïla Louissant playing a key role in preserving the shutout. Louissant made 10 saves in a standout performance between the posts.
The victory moves the Stingers to 1-1 on the young season after opening the campaign with a 3-1 loss to Bishop’s on Friday night. Jessica Droghini scored Concordia’s lone goal in that contest.
The Concordia men’s soccer team had a tougher afternoon in its season opener, falling 5-0 to Laval.
The Stingers will look to bounce back on Friday, Sept. 11, when both Concordia teams travel to UQAM.
The women will kick off at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 8:15 p.m.
