The Concordia Stingers women’s hockey team finished the first half of the season with a strong performance, blanking the Carleton Ravens 2-0 on Nov. 30.
Third-year goaltender Audrey Doyon-Lessard led the team’s efforts, turning away 24 shots for the shutout. Mary Jane O’Shea and Catherine Rancourt were the goal scorers.
“It was a good way to wrap up the first semester,” said Stinger head coach Les Lawton. “We’re going into the holidays on a good note.”
The victory gives the Stingers a 2-7 win-loss record in Quebec conference action. Concordia sits in fourth place – just two points behind the third-place Ravens.
“Our conference is very strong,” Lawton said. “We haven’t had much success in our conference but we’ve shown some progress. We’re going to have to concentrate on beating Ottawa and Carleton in the second half. I believe this team can win a playoff round and qualify for nationals.”
Outside the conference, the Stingers have a 6-2 record, including an impressive 2-0 win over the No. 7-ranked Toronto Varsity Blues. Concordia’s overall record stands at 8-9.
The Stingers will enjoy some down time from hockey, focusing on exams and the holidays. Concordia is back in action Jan 2-4, 2009 when it hosts the 41st annual Theresa Humes hockey tournament.
