Concordia seeded No. 7 at cage nationals

The Concordia Stingers will be the No. 7-seeded team at the Final 8 CIS men’s basketball championship that gets under way Friday in Ottawa.

As the No. 7 team at the nationals the Stingers will meet the No. 2-ranked Calgary Dinos. The teams will play Friday at 12:30 p.m. at Scotiabank Place. The winner advances to the semifinal and the loser goes to the consolation side of the tournament.

The Dinos are the Canada West champions. They defeated the UBC Thunderbirds 80-76 in the final. Calgary posted a 17-5 win-loss record in the regular season and was undefeated in four playoff games. The Dinos finished the year as the No.5-ranked team in the CIS Top 10.

The Stingers enter the tournament as the Quebec champions having scored a 79-76 victory over the UQAM Citadins before a capacity crowd at Concordia gym last Thursday night. They have a 12-4 record in regular season conference play and are 19-4 versus CIS competition this season.

The seedings were decided by a CIS committee late Saturday night. The group also awarded the wildcard berth to the St. Francis Xavier X-Men who go into the championship as the eighth seed.
