Stingers dump Tigers at cage nationals

The Concordia Stingers defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 72-61 to advance to the consolation final of the CIS Final 8 men’s basketball championship at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa on Saturday afternoon.

It was a good recovery from the previous day’s disappointing loss to the Calgary Dinos that forced Concordia to the consolation side of the draw.

“You lose the first game and it’s tough,” said Stingers’ head coach John Dore. “Today I thought the guys responded well. Now, it’s all about pride.”

The Stingers were dominant throughout the Dalhousie game. They were up 18-10 after the first quarter and stretched the lead to 39-18 at halftime.

“We did what we wanted to do in the first half,” said Concordia fifth-year centre Jamal Gallier. “We forced them to make a lot of turnovers.”

With 16 points second-year guard Decee Krah was the leading scorer for Concordia. All-Canadian point guard Damian Buckley had 11 points. Rookie forward Evens Laroche had nine points and 11 rebounds.

The top scorer in the game was Dalhousie’s Simon Farine with 30 points.

The Stingers will face the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the consolation final on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
