Women's rugby semifinal set for Friday

The Concordia Stingers women’s rugby team will host its first home playoff game in seven years when the Ottawa Gee-Gees travel to Concordia stadium in Montreal for a semifinal game on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Stingers have enjoyed an exceptional campaign, posting a 10-1 win-loss record overall and a 5-1 record in Quebec university action. Concordia finished in second place in conference play. The team’s only loss came on Sept. 25 when the first-place Laval Rouge et Or eked out a 19-12 win.

The third-place Gee-Gees have a 3-3 record, but have played well in two contests with the Stingers. Concordia won 18-0 on Oct. 2 and 8-0 on Oct. 17.

“We match up pretty evenly,” said Concordia head coach Graeme McGravie. “I think our backs have a bit more experience, especially Jackie Tittley and Laura Belvedere. We’ll see if we can get them across the line. Overall, I’m cautiously optimistic.”

The winner of the game will meet the winner of Laval-McGill semifinal in the Quebec championship that is scheduled for Oct. 31.
