Watson, Matte named 2nd team all-Canadians

Three members of the Concordia Stingers were named CIS all-Canadians at the 2009 university football gala in Quebec City last week.

Inside receiver Cory Watson and offensive tackle Kristian Matte were named to the second team, while linebacker Cory Greenwood was a first team all-Canadian and was named the outstanding defensive player in the country.

Watson is a fourth-year veteran from Dollard des Ormeaux, Que. He had 52 receptions for 821 yards and six TDs. The reception and yard totals are Concordia single season receiving records. He is the first Stinger receiver since Jean-François Heroux in 1991 to earn all-Canadian honors.

Watson is one of the top rated prospects for the 2010 CFL draft.

“He’s an intense competitor and a nightmare to defend,” says Concordia defensive co-ordinator Warren Craney. “He’s impossible to bring down and very tough to get off a block. He’s a game-breaker.”

Rounding out the accomplished Stinger contingent is offensive tackle Kristian Matte, a fourth-year man from St. Hubert, Que. He is also a good prospect for the upcoming CFL draft.

“Kristian is one of the best athletes I’ve ever seen on our offensive line in my 18 years at Concordia University,” says Concordia head coach Gerry McGrath.
