Stingers football scored 22-unanswered points in the fourth quarter to defeat the Sherbrooke Vert & Or 35-27 in the Shrine Bowl on Saturday, Oct. 5 and clinch an RSEQ playoff spot.
Two field goals by Eric Maximuik and a 23-yard pick-6 by defensive back Mendel Joseph had the Stingers on the board in the first half. They went into the fourth quarter down by 14 points and came out on top after scoring three touchdowns in the final frame.
Receiver Santino Sparagna scored a receiving touchdown and a rushing touchdown, after which the Stingers went for a two-point convert to take a one-point lead with minutes left in the fourth. Running back Dwanté Morgan scored a touchdown shortly after on a 10-yard run to secure the win.
Mendel Joseph was named RSEQ Defensive Player of the Week with two interceptions and a touchdown. He leads the conference in interceptions and pass breakups with 4 a piece.
Morgan was named the RSEQ Offensive Player of the Week after carrying the ball 22 times for 126 yards and a touchdown, averaging 5.7 yards/carry.
Quarterback Olivier Roy finished the game with 14 completions for 218 yards and a touchdown, while Tristan Mancini led the wayt through the air with 6 catches for 107 yards.
Stingers football will be back for their last home game of the season on Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. to face the Montréal Carabins.
