Defensive back Mendel Joseph was named the 2024 RSEQ Defensive Player of the Year, defensive back Isaac Pepin earned the Leadership Award, and Émilie Pfeiffer Badoux was named Assistant Coach of the Year.
Earning the Defensive Player of the Year award, Joseph will be nominated for the President’s Trophy, the Canadian sports award presented to the most outstanding defensive player in U Sports.
Joseph finished the season with 4 interceptions and 6 pass breakups, leading the RSEQ in both categories. He was also named to the RSEQ Football All-Star Team.
On the national level, the second-year DB had the second most interceptions and fifth most pass break-ups in U SPORTS.
In 8 games, Joseph made 21 solo tackles and 11 assists for a total of 26.5 tackles. He also scored a defensive touchdown against Sherbrooke on Oct. 5, which earned him the title of RSEQ Defensive Player of the Week.
"Mendel has been a force since he joined the program last year,” head coach Brad Collinson said. “He has demonstrated that he is the top defensive player in the RSEQ this year with his outstanding play on the field. Mendel has an extremely bright future and we look forward to seeing him grow as he continues his career here at Concordia."
Pepin’s involvement in the community has earned him the 2024 RSEQ Leadership Award. The Charlesbourg native started his own foundation, which has given out multiple grants to sports teams and schools. Last season, Pepin’s foundation helped remodel the Huskies’ locker room at the Polyvalente de Charlesbourg.
Pepin was also the organizer of the protest "Le sport c'est la santé" that gathered 22,000 people in front of the Quebec National Assembly in 2021 advocating for sports activities to resume during the COVID pandemic.
“Isaac's implication in the community is very impressive. Being a full-time student and student-athlete and being able to do what he has done to help his community is what this award is all about. He wants to see people in his community have success and his foundation is making sure that happens,” said Collinson.
Coach Pfeiffer Badoux was named Assistant Coach of the Year for a second consecutive year. She’s been with the Stingers for three years, coaching special teams and is very dedicated to the football program. Pfeiffer Badoux is also a full-time Montreal police officer and played flag football for Team Canada.
“Émilie is well deserving of this award. She gives countless hours for the team while also working full-time as a police officer. Her dedication to the team and its success is unmatched,” Collinson said. “Her efforts with our team also offered her an opportunity to work with the Montreal Alouettes during training camp this year. She gained valuable knowledge and was able to bring back that knowledge to our team.”
