Stingers win Nike tournament

The Concordia Stingers men's basketball team opened its 2005-'06 campaign with two wins and the championship title at the Concordia-Nike tournament last weekend.

Fourth-year forward Patrick Perrotte led the Stingers to an 80-73 victory over the highly respected Ottawa Gee-Gees in the championship game on Saturday. Perrotte scored 20 points and added 10 rebounds. He was named the tournament MVP.

It was a hotly contested event that saw the score change hands a few times. The Stingers even battled back from an 11-point deficit early in the second half. Ben McCarthy and Dwayne Buckley each chipped in with 17 points to help seal the victory.

In the first game of the tournament, Concordia defeated the Ryerson Rams 74-62. Perrotte led all scorers in the game with 16 points. Rastko Popovic added 12 points. Concordia's Buckley and Jamal Gallier were named to the all-star team. The other members of the elite squad were Ryerson's Jeff Proctor and Josh Gibson and Marko Jovic from the Gee-Gees.
