Gerry McGrath invited to coach at CFL camp

Concordia Stinger head coach Gerry McGrath will travel to Regina tomorrow to begin a two-week stint as a guest coach with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders.

For the fourth straight year McGrath will work with Saskatchewan’s kickers and punters. He will work with veteran kicker Luca Congi and two new additions to the Roughriders’ roster – punters Ryan Elaschuk and Louie Sakoda.

McGrath also hopes to get involved in the offence since he has great respect for Roughrider head coach Ken Miller and his knowledge of the game.

“I enjoy working with Luca and Ken Miller,” says McGrath. “It’s great professional development for me. I spend all day watching the best athletes on the field and on film, and I’m doing it with some of the best coaches in the game. It’s a real plus.”

McGrath spent seven seasons kicking in the CFL with Saskatchewan, Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal. He is considered one of the top kicking coaches in Canada.

Currently, three of his Concordia protégés are heading to CFL camps – punter Mike Renaud, Winnipeg; punter Burke Dales, Calgary; and kicker Warren Kean, Calgary. In addition McGrath mentors Saskatchewan’s kickers throughout the year.

McGrath and his Stingers report to Concordia’s training camp on Friday, Aug. 13.
