With a 30-20 victory over the McGill Martlets on Sunday, the Concordia Stingers women's rugby team finishes the regular season with a perfect 6-0 win-loss record.
It is the first time since 1994 that the Concordia women’s rugby team has put together an undefeated season. The Stingers also won three exhibition games before the start of the Quebec campaign, giving them a 9-0 record overall.
“It was not what I expected when we started the year,” said head coach Graeme McGravie. “I knew we had to play Laval twice and I would’ve been happy with a split in those games. But I am very happy with a 6-0 record in conference play.”
Concordia beat its toughest opponent – the Laval Rouge et Or – by scores of 10-9 and 15-10 in the regular season.
The strong showing locks up first place in the Quebec standings and gives Concordia home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Stingers will host a semifinal game on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Concordia stadium. The opponent will be determined when the last game of the season takes place Wednesday night between the Ottawa Gee-Gees and McGill.
McGravie is optimistic about moving forward in the post season.
“We have very strong forwards,” he said. “No one seems to be able to match us. We’re winning the physical battles in games.”
