Kyle Desmarais represents Canada at Pan Am Games

Concordia Stinger all-Canadian guard Kyle Desmarais is at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico representing Canada in the men’s basketball competition.

The elite international competition began Oct. 14 and wraps up this Sunday. It features approximately 6,000 athletes from 42 nations participating in 36 sports.

In the basketball competition, Canada will play round-robin games versus Argentina, Mexico and Puerto Rico today through Friday.

The other pool consists of Uruguay, the Dominican Republic, Brazil and the United States. The top two teams from each pool will play in the semifinals on Saturday. Gold and bronze medals games will be held Sunday.

Canada’s roster is made up of Canadian Interuniversity Sport athletes. This group also competed at the Summer Universiade, capturing a silver medal last August.

Desmarais, a 23-year-old native of Montreal, is in his third year of eligibility with the Stingers. Last season he helped Concordia win the Quebec university championship and was the league’s MVP.

Also joining Desmarais with Team Canada is Concordia assistant coach David Bloom. He is serving as team manager.
