Four members of the Concordia Stingers have been named to the RSEQ women’s rugby all-star team announced late yesterday.
Hughanna Gaw, a third-year No. 8 from Elgin, Que., appears on the honor roll for the third consecutive time. She scored eight tries in six games and was the leading tackler on the Stingers.
“Hughanna has established herself as one of the top players in the RSEQ this season,” says Concordia head coach Graeme McGravie. “She is a dream to coach. She never quits or shies away from contact and is keen to learn and improve every facet of her game on and off the field.”
The other three all-stars are all in their fifth and final year of CIS eligibility.
Sarah Nesbitt, a Design Art student from Regina, has earned her second straight all-star honor. The veteran lock scored three tries this season.
Claire Hortop, the leader who studies in the Exercise Science program, has been a Quebec all-star in each of her five seasons with the Stingers. The Mississauga, Ont. native scored two tries this year.
After an accomplished career at the University of Western Ontario, Latoya Blackwood made an impact in the Quebec league this season. The fifth-year centre from Brampton, Ont. scored three tries and achieved all-star status.
The Stingers are in Quebec City tomorrow to play the Laval Rouge et Or in the conference championship. Game time is 1 p.m. The winner advances to the CIS national championship at Trent University in Peterborough, Ont. next week.
