Stinger Hughanna Gaw named rugby all-Canadian

Concordia Stinger Hughanna Gaw, a third-year No. 8 from Elgin, Que., was named to the CIS all-Canadian team for women's rugby at a championship dinner hosted by Trent University in Peterborough, Ont. tonight.

Gaw scored eight tries in six games during the regular season and was the leading tackler on the Stingers. She was named her team’s game MVP on two occasions and was Concordia Female Athlete of the Week on Sept. 13 and Sept. 26.

“Hughanna has established herself as one of the top players in the RSEQ this season,” says Concordia head coach Graeme McGravie. “She is a dream to coach. She never quits or shies away from contact and is keen to learn and improve every facet of her game on and off the field.

“She is a hard-hitting tackler and has really improved her game with the ball in hand. In her third year, she has become one of the leaders on the team and does so through her words and actions.”

This is the second time in her university career that Gaw has received national recognition. In 2009, she was named the CIS Rookie of the Year.
