It was a game people in women’s hockey circles will be talking about for a long time.
When the Concordia Stingers defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees 6-2 before an enthusiastic crowd at the Ed Meagher Arena on Friday night, a number of remarkable events occurred.
First, it was the last home game of the year for the Stingers and there was a brief pregame ceremony honoring four players who are graduating this spring.
Fifth-year players Alynn Doiron, Meaghan George, Maggie MacNeil and Catherine Rancourt were presented to the crowd. But the extraordinary piece came later in the game when each one of the seniors scored a goal. With 1:02 left to play, George scored the Stingers’ sixth goal, completing the seniors’ amazing farewell performance.
“Unbelievable,” said Concordia head coach Les Lawton, who was a little short on words on the emotional night.
Heading into last night’s action, the most goals the Stingers had scored in a game this season was five. George’s goal, the Stingers’ sixth of the game, marked a season high for the team.
The victory also put an end to a 17-game winless streak in league and exhibition play.
All this happened as Lawton was celebrating a great achievement. It was his 999th game on the bench as head coach of the Stingers.
The season wraps up with one last game on Sunday when the Stingers travel across the city to meet the Martlets at McGill. It will be Lawton’s 1000th game as head coach at Concordia. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
