Stingers clinch first place in men's cage conference

Kyle Desmarais scored at the buzzer to give the Concordia Stingers a 62-61 victory over the McGill Redmen in men’s university basketball action at Concordia gym on Saturday night.

The victory locks up first place in the Quebec conference and gives the Stingers home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.

The No. 10-ranked Stingers now have a 12-2 win-loss record, while McGill falls to 8-6 and will have to battle the UQAM Citadins (7-7) for second place.

Desmarais won the game for the Stingers in dramatic fashion. The ball was in-bounded to him with four seconds left to play and McGill in front 61-60. The third-year guard drove to the net and made the basket just before the buzzer sounded, sending a capacity crowd into a frenzy.

Desmarais, a 2011 second team all-Canadian, finished the night with five points, three rebounds and two blocks.

The leading scorer in the game was fifth-year guard Decee Krah who had 15 points for the Stingers. Fourth-year forward Evens Laroche hauled in 12 rebounds and had nine points.

The top scorer for the Redmen was Aleksander Mitrovic with 12 points.

The Stingers wrap up regular season play next week with two games. Concordia hosts UQAM on Friday at 8 p.m. and then travels to the Laval to face the Rouge et Or on Saturday at 8 p.m.
