Evens Laroche named MVP of men's cage conference

Forward Evens Laroche, who was instrumental in leading the Concordia Stingers to an impressive 14-2 record in regular season play, was named MVP of the Quebec men’s university basketball conference.

“He is Mr. Everything for us – our heart and soul,” says Concordia head coach John Dore. “His biggest asset is his athletic ability. He has the ability to play all five positions and has for us this year. He scores inside and outside. He rebounds. He defends. He can do it all. Every time he is on the court he makes positive things happen.”

Laroche, a fourth-year player from Montreal, finished the season with an average of 13.3 points and 7.0 rebounds a game. He also averaged 2.6 steals a game which is tops in the Quebec conference and second in the CIS rankings.

Laroche is the only Stinger on the RSEQ first all-star team. It is his second all-star honour. He was also a first team all-star in 2010.

When the league announced its honour roll today, third-year guard Kyle Desmarais and and fifth-year guard Decee Krah were named to the second team. Desmarais led Quebec in scoring with an average of 13.9 points a game. He was a first team all-star and league MVP in 2011. Krah was second in league scoring with 13.4 points a game. It’s the third all-star honour for Krah.

Guard Jerome Blake was named to the all-rookie team. He averaged 9.1 points and 19 minutes of playing time a game.

“He’s met all our expectations,” says Dore. “Jerome scores, he shoots 3s and he’s proven to be a good defensive player. I think he’s going to score a lot of points for us over the course of his career and he’s going to be a leader.”

Finally, Dore was named RSEQ Coach of the Year. He has now been honoured as the outstanding coach on 13 occasions.
