Anderson, Swedes go for gold

Cecilia Anderson, the Concordia Stingers' No. 1 goaltender for the last 2.5 years, will compete for a gold medal at the Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy on Monday afternoon.

In the women's hockey semifinals on Friday afternoon, Anderson and the Swedish national team defeated the Americans 3-2 in an overtime shootout. The win guarantees Sweden at least a silver medal.

The gold meal game is scheduled for Monday at 2:30 p.m. and will be televised by CBC.

Anderson, 23, did not start against the U.S., but did play a round-robin game versus Canada last Tuesday. She made 39 saves against the powerful Canadian side, but Sweden lost 8-1.

The native of Väddö, Sweden proudly wears her Concordia mask/helmet in international competition. Anderson played for the Stingers in the fall semester, posting a 1.43 GAA and a .945 save percentage. She is expected to return to Montreal after the Olympics.

Her accomplishments at the university level include being named CIS rookie of the year and a first-team all-Canadian in 2003-'04. She was named to the second all-Canadian team a year ago. She was also named QSSF MVP and Concordia's Female Athlete of the Year last spring.

Anderson is a third-year Leisure Sciences student.
